Demetrios "Meechi" Tsitsilianos

Demetrios "Meechi" Tsitsilianos

I met Demetrios on top of a cliff in Georgia overhanging a fast flowing river, in the middle of November. He had a a guitar and was entertaining and conversing with a couple that had stumbled upon the cliff. I asked him "What's the oldest song you know?" and he played "This Little Light of Mine". Meechi is a Greek Orthodox Christian, and sings in an orthodox choir. He says that the music of the choir, and the rituals of the church, are unchanged since its founding in 1054.

Jade Nicole

Jade Nicole

Jade has been singing her whole life. She recorded "I'll Fly Away" for the MidSouth Folk Sessions. She learned to sing as a part of a church, as reflected in the gospel overtones in her folk recording. I asked her In her free time, she loves Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, and other nerdy stuff.

Norma Jean Humphreys

Norma Jean has been singing since being a little girl, and her dad was a fiddler. Her first husband was in the Enola Gay: the plane that dropped the first Atomic Bomb of WWII. She sings love songs, and is affectionately called "Mom" by the town of Union where she lives. She is a great soul full of stories and songs and love.

Trevor Hammons

Trevor Hammons

Trevor is the living member of a long and old line of musicians- the Hammons family of West Virginia. Many of the most soulful fiddle tunes in America come from this family, who carried them with them as they immigrated across the Atlantic into the Appalachians. Trevor knows his family's music by heart and his fiddling and banjo playing is certainly filled with heart. He is one of the most excellent and sincere musicians you will ever meet.

The Keeney Mountain Boys

The Keeney Mountain Boys

These young men are some of the best and most authentic bluegrass pickers and singers out there. They were all taught by their grandparents in the hills of West Virginia- the old style- and their harmonies are RICH. Dustin and Dalton form the crux of the singers, and play guitar and mandolin respectively, and Kody Burns backs them up on rhythm guitar. These guys are a class act and a must see- they are currently up for booking across the South.

Jim McLaughlin

Jim McLaughlin

Jim is an excellent young musician who is versed in the Ballad tradition. Jim's voice is golden- powerful and affectionate. Jim plays with the Appalachian Ensemble at Davis and Elkins College in West Virginia. Jim is also an excellent teacher.

Josh Morgan

By day, Josh Morgan is a correctional officer. By night, he sings beautiful songs at the campfire with his friends and asks the deep questions of life. This true West Virginian is proud, and his music reflects his pride and sincerity.

These guys rock! Hunter is a champion dulcimer player. Hunter says about guitar player Brian: "“We got together to perform at an Old Time Show at Tamarack,” he said. “We needed a guitar player and I picked the best guitarist from the region.” Lars is a jazz-trained bassist, and Lewis Prichard is the fiddler in this group. This duo from Fayetteville, AR plays a little bit of everything on their guitar and banjo. A modern day Bonnie and Clyde, these two play jazz/ bluegrass fusion criminally well. I met Biff at the Highberry music festival in the Ozark mountains. He had snapped a guitar string, and jokingly asked "Does anybody have a G-string!?" Fortunately I was his neighbor and did have the string. Biff plays a very funky acoustic style- check him out on the listen and learn page.

Randal Morton

Randal Morton

Randal, banjo extraordinaire, is one of the players responsible for starting the Memphis bluegrass scene in the 1960s. Randal always had jazz influences, and his playing reflects it. Randal has won numerous competitions, including the national banjo championship contest in 1975. He won this after only 6 years of playing the banjo. Find his band, Devil Train, every Monday night at the Buccaneer Lounge. This is a show you don't want to miss!

Rachel Ammons

Fear the chicken! Rachel plays with Smilin' Bob Lewis in the band Tyrannosaurus Chicken, an awesome duo that has fantastic music compatibility. Rachel plays fiddle, cello, banjo, guitar, bones.. pretty much anything you put in her hands. Check out her demonstrating the bones and jawharp in the Listen and Learn section of the site. Bob is a lifelong musician from Arkansas. He and Rachel Ammons form Tyrannosaurus Chicken, a massively energetic duo with an electric stage presence. In concert, he favors a resonator guitar, but he seems to play just about everything else. I read somewhere that "Even when Bob is furious, you'll still see him smiling." Hence, Smilin' Bob! Brian Harris

Brian Harris

This self-taught bassist has played with too many bands to name, R.E.M among them. Not always a rocker, however, he spent a long time in Asa Nisi Masa, a band named after a modern-day folklore tale. This tale, featured in the 1963 movie "8 1/2" uses the term which supposedly can make paintings on children's walls come to life. In the band, Brian played a custom 8-string bass with sympathetic strings. Their music is very chordal and uses simple instrumentation of bass, drums, and violin.

Roy Kingston

Roy is a mandolinist and fiddler. Every Saturday he can, he attends Memphis Area Bluegrass Association's jam at Hope Presbyterian.

Moses is the man when it comes to smooth yet artistically furious bass lines. One Sunday, he played with a towel over his fretboard. Strangely enough.. it didn't affect his sound at all. "That's to see how well I know my instrument," said Moses.
